The Russian Federal Space Agency said the country was the 2006 leader in space launches with 45% of craft sent into space this year.
According to RIA Novosti, Anatoly Perminov, head of the agency, said Russia launched 24 spacecraft this year and plans a final one on 27 December.
Only 20 launches are expected in 2007, with $912.3 million invested in the space program by the Russian government.
The USA is in second place with 18 spacecraft launches in 2006, while Japan and China shared third place with six launches each.
After 2010 the U.S. will use Russian spacecraft to fly its astronauts to the International Space Station. In 2012 Russia will start building its own space shuttles, the Clipper.
Mr Perminov told the list of space tourists has been filled in until 2008. “We have determined that one place in the Soyuz will be always reserved for a Russian cosmonaut, another – for an American astronaut, and the third will be offered to space tourists,” – he said.
